Confident people tend to be more successful in a wide variety of domains. It is this strong sense of confidence and self-esteem that allows people to go out in the world and reach for their goals. In his book Self-Efficacy: The Exercise of Control, psychologist Albert Bandura explained that it is confidence, more than any other quality, that contributes to positive outcomes when pursuing goals. But can you have too much self-confidence? Is it possible to have too much of a good thing? In most cases, knowing your strengths and having the assuredness to go out and take risks are admirable qualities. But when this confidence makes you inflexible, opposed to trying new things, and incapable of listening to others, it can become detrimental to success and well-being. The Effects of Too Much Self-Confidence Excessive self-confidence can cause a number of problems in an individuals personal, social, and professional life. Missed opportunities, such as not taking on projects because they seem to easy or beneath your abilitiesTaking on too much, such as saying yes to projects that you lack the skills to completeSocial consequences, such as alienating friends by coming across as arrogantWorkplace consequences, such as coming off as overly conceited without the requisite skillRelationship consequences, which can result from being too concerned with  your capacities and performance and not enough with your partners In one review of earlier studies on self-esteem, researchers found that high self-esteem could sometimes have undesirable consequences. Kids with higher self-esteem were more likely to engage in risk-taking behaviors. People with high self-esteem also tended to have worse relationships because they blamed their partners for any problems with the relationship. High self-esteem was also linked to a higher frequency of violent and aggressive behaviors. That isnt to suggest that self-esteem and confidence are bad things. In some situations, even excessive self-confidence can actually lead to some success. Highly self-confident people can sometimes bluff their way through situations, convincing others that they truly have the abilities behind their inflated sense of self. In other cases, excess confidence can be seen as deceit or even narcissism, qualities that might make an employee less appealing to current and future employers. Overconfidence in our own abilities is something that happens to everyone once in a while. You might overestimate your ability to finish a project by a certain date, only to run out of time before the project is due. The good thing is that such overconfidence is often self-correcting. Just a few instances of turning in late or shoddy work is probably enough to make you take a serious look at your time management skills. The next time a project is due, you are more likely to manage your time wisely and be more realistic about how long it will take you to complete the work. It is when this overconfidence is habitual that more serious and often lasting consequences can arise. What Causes Too Much Confidence? A number of different factors can contribute to excessive levels of self-confidence. Upbringing, culture, personality, and past experiences can all play a role in shaping how a persons sense of self develops. We are all essentially the center of our own universes, so it isnt really surprising that our own perceptions, experiences, thoughts, needs, and wants tend to loom largest in our minds. But why do some people seem to form such an exaggerated sense of self? Research suggests that certain cognitive biases can play a role in contributing to overconfidence in ones own opinions and ideas. These biases cause people to interpret events and experiences in ways that are biased toward their own existing beliefs, attitudes, and opinions. As a result, people often tend to believe that their own way of thinking and acting is superior and correct. This can result in people failing to consider how other ideas might be beneficial as well as failing to see any possible drawbacks to their own approach. It is this illusion of personal infallibility that can contribute to having too much confidence.   Perceptions of Confidence So how do we determine what levels of self-confidence are appropriate? And are such levels the same for different people and across different situations? Self-confidence is not just a psychological construct; it is also heavily influenced by culture. Individualistic cultures, for example, tend to prize self-confidence more highly than do collectivist  cultures. Society’s expectations for how much confidence people should have exerts a powerful influence on how we perceive confidence both in ourselves and in others. For example, during the earlier half of the 20th-century self-confidence was sometimes viewed as a detriment, depending upon who you were. People were expected to obey authority figures, including those who were older or who ranked higher in the social hierarchy. Self-confidence in children and women was particularly frowned upon, as kids and women were usually expected to be obedient and deferential. As the cultural tides have shifted, society’s expectations in terms of self-confidence have also changed. People are encouraged to be independent and self-esteem has become a prized characteristic. Parents want their children to be self-confident, to know what they want, and to have the motivation to achieve their goals. Social Norms Influence Perceptions of Confidence But how we perceive self-confidence is not always consistent from one individual to the next. For example, research has found that female leaders who behave the same as their male counterparts are more likely to be perceived as bossy, emotional, or aggressive. This confidence double standard makes it more difficult for women to be promoted in the workplace and to rise to leadership positions. The behaviors needed to succeed in the workplace are the very same ones that women are often punished for exhibiting. Research also suggests that we tend to penalize others when they behave in ways that are considered violations of social norms. Norms dictate that men should be confident and assertive, while women are expected to be nurturing and warm. Behaving outside these norms can have a number of consequences for both men and women. Men who are not highly assertive may be seen as timid or weak, while women who are self-assured are viewed as bossy. How Confidence Is Expressed Can Lead to Social Consequences In one study conducted by Yale researchers, men who expressed anger actually boosted their perceived status. Women who expressed the same anger, on the other hand, were rated as less competent and were thus accorded lower wages and status. The researchers also found that women’s anger tended to be attributed to internal characteristics (“She’s an angry person”) while men’s anger was blamed on outside circumstances. Interestingly, providing some type of external explanation for the anger eliminated this gender bias. So in many cases, it may not be that people are too confident. Instead, unspoken gender norms and stereotypes may cause people, especially women, to be judged as overconfident when they are really just expressing normal levels of assertiveness. Certain expressions of confidence, however, may not carry the same social and professional risks that other displays of self-confidence might. Researchers Melissa Williams and Larissa Tiedens found that women who expressed dominance through body language and facial expressions, such as  standing tall and using a loud voice, did not suffer the same loss in social perception.   While this obviously does not solve the problem of gender bias, such research does point to ways that people can express confidence without being labeled as “too confident.” Are Today’s Kids Too Confident? Another example of how perceptions of confidence can be influenced by culture is how kids are sometimes viewed by older adults. Criticisms of youth often suggest that today’s kids are frequently the recipients of so-called “participation trophies.” In other words, children receive praise for simply participating, not for the actual content of their performance. Such praise is designed to build confidence and self-esteem. Critics suggest that this approach leads to a sense of entitlement or even unearned confidence. That children move into adulthood believing that simply showing up is enough to succeed, making it harder to accept when this success does not come so easy. However, researchers such as Carol Dweck have found that praising efforts plays a critical role in building what is known as a growth mindset. A mindset is an underlying belief about intelligence and learning. People with a fixed mindset tend to believe that intelligence is an inborn trait. Those with a growth mindset believe that they can become smarter through their own efforts. People with fixed mindsets tend to give up in the face of challenges because they believe they simply lack the innate traits and skills needed for success. Those with growth mindsets, on the other hand, have the confidence and understanding that they can overcome the challenge through study, practice, and effort. So what’s the best way to build confidence and a growth mindset? Dweck suggests that praising efforts, rather than outcomes, is the key. Doing this helps kids realize that their own efforts and actions determine the outcomes, which helps them gain the confidence they need to keep soldiering forward even in the face of difficulty. This doesnt mean lavishing praise on kids for doing nothing. Rather, it means recognizing their efforts instead of only focusing on the results. So why do older generations perceive younger people as overly confident? Are today’s kids really too confident for their own good? This perception is more likely due to shifts in cultural norms and expectations. Older generations were encouraged to be quiet, obedient, and out of the way. Seen, but not heard, was typically described as the ideal when it came to kids. Culture has shifted, as has our understanding of child development and children’s needs. It may not be that kids today are too confident; they are simply allowed a level of self-expression that older generations may not have gotten to enjoy as children. Building Authentic Self-Confidence Is it possible that you have too much self-confidence? For many people, the answer to that question is probably not. In fact, people often tend to deal with the opposite problem â€" having too little confidence.  So if you have a solid sense of self and the assuredness to go after what you want in life, thats great! If your sense of self extends to caring about and being concerned with the lives of others, then your confidence levels are probably just about right. If you are focused purely on yourself leaving little room for other people, then there might be a problem. There’s nothing wrong with being confident, but if this confidence is expressed as narcissism or grandiosity that damages your relationships, then there is a chance that it may be excessive. Or that you are expressing this confidence in a way that is not helping your health and relationships. When helping children develop healthy levels of confidence and esteem, praising them for efforts  is only one part of the puzzle. Confidence also comes from having the love and support of dependable caregivers, as well as a solid guidance system that balances rewards with appropriate boundaries. In such settings, children are able to explore the world, discover their personal strengths and limits, and develop the ability to self-regulate. The problem with too much self-confidence is that it often involves a grandiose view of the self without much substance behind it. People who think they are the best, smartest, or most qualified are, after all, sometimes the worst, most uninformed, and least qualified. Except they are often the only ones unaware of their shortcomings, a phenomenon known as the Dunning-Kruger effect. In other cases, excessive self-confidence involves ignoring the needs of others in favor of ones own interests. This can lead to major problems in all kinds of relationships, including romantic partnerships, friendships, and family ties. After all, who wants to spend time with someone who thinks he is better than everyone else and who only thinks about himself? How to Develop Appropriate Self-Confidence So what can people do to ensure that their self-confidence is realistic, authentic, and socially appropriate? Focus on the effort, not the outcome. Whether you are evaluating your own success or offering praise to your children, try to place a greater emphasis on the work that went into the task rather than just focusing on how things turned out. You cannot always control how things go, but you can control the amount of work you put into achieving your goals.Keep learning new things. Even if you are highly confident about your skills in an area, keep looking for new challenges. It is easy to become overconfident if we think we know everything there is to know about a subject. Finding new challenges to overcome not only sharpens your skills; it also reminds you that there are fresh ways of thinking about things.Listen to what others have to say. Overconfidence can sometimes cause people to become rigid and even dogmatic. Instead of assuming that your way is the right or only way, try to keep an open mind. You might not always agree with other people, but it is important to listen in order to gain a new perspective. The book The Classic Slum: Salford Life in the First Quarter of the Century by Robert Roberts gives an honest account of a village in Manchester in the first 25 years of the 20th century. Lastly, the work is scholarly and concise, as Roberts chooses to get straight to the point and elaborate on it rather than saying the same thing in many different ways. There is no other crime as heinous as the crime of forcible rape. The very thought of forcing one to perform sexually against his or her own will is deplorable. The traumatic experience of being raped inhibits some victims from reporting the crime to the local authorities. Victims have been conditioned to expect the worst if the case actually goes to trial. Without reporting the crime, the sexual predator is free to roam the streets and re-offend whenever the urge hits. Rarely is the crime of rape about sex, but rather it involves the psychological distortion of having control over another human being. Courtrooms across the U. S. have been taking the necessary measures to ensure the privacy, protection, and emotional stability of the victim in order to secure that justice is rendered. In June of 2001, a young woman was sleeping in her bed with her young daughter in the next room. At approximately 1:00 a. m. , her home was broken into by an in-law and she was brutally raped repeatedly. To make matters worse, the young woman was three months pregnant with her unborn son. The attacker left, at or around 4:00 a. m. , the young woman sat motionless in the floor of her room trying to conceive what had just transpired. Her young daughter awoke around 7:00 a. m. , to which she snapped out of her daze, retrieved her young daughter, and immediately called the police. What transpired after this atrocious chain of events is of great importance to anyone who has been sexually assaulted. The prosecutor opened the case with a summation of the aforementioned events. The trial began in September 2001 following the Grand Jury indictment in August of the same year. The prosecutor compared the defendant’s behavior to that of a ravaging animal meticulously seeking out its prey. The victim was present, but the prosecutor and the victim’s advocate kept her LEGAL ISSUES 3 segregated in another area of the courthouse to avoid any emotional or physical upset that could be detrimental to her or her unborn child. The defense opened with a statement referencing the defendant’s prior knowledge of the victim and cited that he felt that there was a mutual attraction between him and the alleged victim. He then added that what had occurred was not rape, but rather a sexual encounter to which the victim later felt remorse and guilt for it having happened. The prosecution called several witnesses including the doctor who had examined and performed a rape kit on the victim following the rape. The doctor concurred that the victim had several vaginal tears which were consistent with the victim resisting her attacker. He further stated that the victim was bleeding vaginally causing much concern due to the fact that she was pregnant. Bleeding vaginally in this instance could have been caused by the amount of force used during the attack, but the doctor concluded that the utmost concern at that moment was whether or not the victim experiencing a miscarriage. The prosecution also called the victim to the stand. The victim’s voice seemed shaky and quiet. She was tearful throughout much of her testimony. The prosecution asked the victim to please explain to the court what happened on the night she was attacked. Through tears and sobs she managed to recount the events of that night. Finally, the prosecution asked the victim if she could identify her attacker. The victim then pointed to the defendant. The defense attorney cross-examined the victim, but he did not cross the medical expert. He asked the victim if she knew the defendant. The victim stated that she did know him because he was her husband’s uncle. The defense then asked the victim where her husband was on the night of the attack, and she stated that he was working the midnight shift at the steel mill. His shifts were also noted to be twelve hour shifts. The defense insinuated that there was an emotional LEGAL ISSUES 4 relationship between the victim and the defendant, but the victim stated that if there were an emotional relationship, then it was only in the mind of the defendant. The defense concluded that he was finished examining the witness, and she was excused from the courtroom. The defense then rested without calling the defendant to testify on his own behalf. During closing arguments, the prosecution made reference to the defendant’s prior criminal record of sexual assault. The defense objected, but the judge overruled the objection. The prosecutor again stated that the defendant’s behavior was barbaric and inhumane. He pleaded to the jury to find the defendant guilty in order to protect society as a whole. The defense closed by stating that the entire incident was that of a woman of got caught up in the throes of passion but then later felt guilty as she was a married woman. He stated that his client was not guilty of raping the victim, but rather guilty of adultery if anything. Both sides then rested. The judge instructed the jury as to how and what they were to rule upon. Within two hours, the jury returned because the defendant had chosen to change his plea from not guilty to guilty. The prosecutor agreed and the judge decided to hear the plea bargain. In exchange for the defendant pleading guilty, the court sentenced the defendant to 37 years in the state’s maximum security prison, but the state suspended 10 of the 37 years. Following the defendant’s release, he would immediately register as a sex offender and would be on supervised probation for the following 10 years. The judge further ordered that the defendant would never be allowed to have any contact of any kind with the victim, her family, her children, or any subsequent children born to the victim. This plea bargain allowed the defendant to avoid the possibility of having to serve between 40-60 years in prison. LEGAL ISSUES 5 Some may feel that the defendant got off fairly easy, but at least he was forced to pay his debt to society. This case can be referenced in Commonwealth of Virginia v. Benjamin Clyde Newman (2001). The victim continues to struggle with psychological issues resulting from the attack even today. Since the beginning of life, nourishment is the first requirement for all kind of alive. According to Chassy (2007), early humans lived a hunter gatherer lifestyle and that around 10000 years ago they started to transition into an agricultural lifestyle. Also they feed animals to their milk, meat and eggs. Later, some people interested in agriculture in order to survive and earn money. In today’s world, technological developments and medical improvements resulted in higher life standards and world population become more and more crowded. Lots of farmers and food companies emerged in order to meet the needs of this growing population. Organic foods started to be insufficient for human beings because of the increasing population. As a result of this insufficiency, people seek different kind of foods with the help of technological developments and they created genetically modified foods (GM foods). Genetically modified crops first appeared commercially in the mid-1990s and today GM crops are grown commercially by 8. 25 million farmers on 200 million acres spread throughout 17 countries (Schmidt, 2005). Genetically modified foods or biotech foods can be described simply as foods derived from genetically modified organisms. These crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecular biology techniques. In his essay â€Å"Genetically Modified Foods: An Insight† Raaz Maheshwari (2012) explains that â€Å"Genetically modified foods are derived from genetically modified organisms. Genetically modified organisms have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering, using a process of either Cisgenesis or Transgenesis. These techniques are much more precise than Mutagenesis (mutation breeding) where an organism is exposed to radiation or chemicals to create a non-specific but stable change. † At the beginning, these crops have a bright and promising future. However, safety of genetically modified foods was started to questioned and become a central issue driving the genetic engineering controversy today (Carman, 2004). Although some scientists claims that food derived from GM crops on the market does not have greater risk to human health than organic foods, there is a idespread research on several negative effects of GM foods , including safety issues, economic concerns and environmental hazards. Recently, concerns about GM foods have raised by all environmental activists, religious organizations, public interest groups, professional associations, other scientists and government officials. Also, they criticized potential hazards of GM food (Whitman, 2000). Specifically, this study posed the r esearch question: What are the general negative effects of genetically modified foods on earth’s ecology and human health. As I mentioned earlier, humanity always requiring all kind of food. Although they meet their requires from hunting very beginning, agriculture is the main food resources when the first crop harvested. However food resources doesn’t enough for humanity because of huge crowds, because of th? s reason people find a new form of food which named genetically modified foods or biotech foods. These foods derived from genetically modified organisms. Since mid-1900s genetically modified foods using our daily meal and from these time these foods always negotiated. There is no exact consequences of these negotiations. However, there are lots of negative effects of genetically modified foods on earth’s ecology and human health such as; allergetic diseases, poisoning both human and animals and killing beneficial insects. To begin with, lots of result of researches show us genetically modified foods are dangerous for natural life. According to Batalian(N. D. ) studies about GM products shown that these products can kill beneficial insects which most notably the monarch butterfly larvae. He also said there are other studies related to the death of bees which are died during a contained trial with Monsanto’s Bt cotton, springtails and ladybird beetles. For example GM trees or ‘super-trees’ are being developed which can be sprayed from the air to kill literally all of surrounding life, except the GM trees (Batalian,N. D. ). He also said these trees are often sterile and flowerless which is in contrast to rainforest teaming with life, or where a single tree can host thousands of unique species of insects, fungi, mammals and birds in an interconnected ecosphere. There are also terminator trees which has developed plants with the New Zealand Forest Research Agency to create still more lethal tree plantations. These super deadly trees are look like super-trees, however these kind leaves exuding toxic chemicals to kill caterpillars and other surrounding insects(Batalian,N. D. ) Like the other effects of GM foods it also causes increasing numbers of resistant pests. According to Mellon (N. D. ), â€Å"There are signs that the most popular HT crops-those resistant to the herbicide glyphosate-will lose effectiveness as weeds become resistant to the herbicide. Scientists expect that BT crops, too, will succump to pests that evolve resistance to the BT toxins. Secondly, consumption of genetically modified foods from humans effects their health negatively. First effect of GM foods on human health is allergenicity. According to Bakshi (N. D. ), food allergy is a very important health issue with the prevalence of immunoglobulin E antibody-mediated food allergies among adults being approximately 2% and nearly 5% in children. Bakshi also said consumption of genetically modified foods may trigger all ergic reaction. For example Bakshi said kiwi fruit not associated with any allergies in the 1960s. However , there are some people who are currently allergic to it; the allergenic protein in the kiwi fruit was identified to be actinidin. Bakshi also said â€Å"Genetically modified foods can introduce novel proteins into the food supply from organisms that are never consumed as foods. Some of those proteins could be allergenic. † Second effects of GM foods on human health is antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance is the ability of an organism to be unaffected by the antibiotic, occurs naturally by evolution. According to Bakshi(N. D. , genetic engineering usually involves the use of genes for antibiotic resistance as ‘selectable markers. ’ These markers help to choose cells that consolidated foreign genes. There are concerns that these chosen genes might recombine with pathogenic bacteria in the environment or with naturally occurring bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract of mammals who consume genetically modified food, contributing to the growing public health risk associated with antibiotic resistance for infections that cannot be treated with traditional antibiotics. It must be true negative effects of GM foods because lots of European countries including Britain have refused to allow the Novartis Bt corn to be grown because the ampicillin resistance gene might be transferred from Bt corn to bacteria which these bacterias making a far less effective antibiotic against bacterial infections (Bakshi,N. D. ). Similarly Bakshi , enhs. umn. edu, said â€Å" In recent years health professionals have become alarmed by the increasing number of bacterial strains that are showing resistance to antibiotics. Bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics by creating antibiotic resistance genes through natural mutation. Third effect of GM foods on human health is cancer and degenerative diseases. According to article of Batalian (N. D. ) , lots of researches show us GM foods or hormones which is used for increased milk production in cow causes breast and prostate cancer. Also he said some of Canadian researches prove that GM organism which injected rats mammals l ike humans, this organism damaged thyroid cysts and internal organ. Besides , consuming GM foods causes autoimmune diseases, inflammation, arthritis and lymphoma(Batalian,N. D. ) Lastly, gene transfer from GM foods to body cells can cause disease. According to WHO(N. D. ), â€Å"Gene transfer from GM foods to cells of the body or to bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract would cause concern if the transferred genetic material adversely affects human health. This would be particularly relevant if antibiotic resistance genes, used in creating GMOs, were to be transferred. † In the light of all above mentioned studies, it could be said that scientist have not discovered the true researches consequences about genetically modified foods. They growth a non-natural nutrition, however they do not know their effects on human body and environment. It can be cause lots of bad diseases on human body and harm environment. Because it is dangerous for all kind of alive and natural systems, GM foods production processes should be controlled by new ministry and GM foods may be tested before selling in markets. Those who are support GM foods said these foods have benefits on future hunger and they also support we all need these foods in future. According to Feuilherade (2011),humanity needs 40% more foods by the middle of the century and GM foods is the only solution of this big problem. He also add these foods are healthy for human body because if we change the DNAs of foods, lots of vitamins and drugs may added inside the foods. However, www. webmd. com(N. D. ), mentioned these foods are not natural and has no guarantees, also has some important risks, such as; introducing allergens and toxins to food, accidental contamination between genetically modified and non-genetically modified foods, antibiotic resistance and adversely changing the nutrient content of a crop. Scientists and governments always discuss this topic, however there is no exact result about harms or benefits of GM foods. Nobody do not know consequences of GM foods. Maybe after 50 years it will cause lots of diseases even will kill millions of people. There should be more and more researches about these foods and scientist and governments should give more importance, also all government which country interest growing GM foods, they should open new ministry and specific research center of GM foods before sell these product to innocence people. In conclusion, about GM foods, there are lots of researches and its effects on health and environment are not obvious. The scientist will move to improve these foods and sell them billions of people worldwide. With the support of governments and big bosses, poor and ignorant people buy these uncertain foods. Finally, I personally believe that GM foods will cause lots of die forth coming years, because of these reason these procedure should limited and controlled strictly by the government before selling. Also natural agriculture should be supported and use of organic food promoted.
